Smythson opens new flagship boutique on New York’s Madison Avenue

British luxury lifestyle brand Smythson has opened a new flagship boutique on New York’s Madison Avenue, marking a return to bricks-and-mortar retail in the city and a further step in its international growth strategy.

The 1,400-square-foot store marks 25 years since the British luxury brand opened its first standalone store in New York, as it looks to expand its presence in the US.

Designed in partnership with architectural studio Johnson Pinney Architects, the boutique introduces a new retail concept intended to showcase the brand’s leather goods and paper products. Its offering includes diaries, notebooks, stationery, business and travel accessories, games and homeware.

The interior features handcrafted European oak joinery, curved wall panels and a central book wall finished in brushed brass. A suspended installation by multidisciplinary studio Fung + Bedford comprises two hand-folded, feather-like forms inspired by the watermark on Smythson’s featherweight paper.

The store also houses a bespoke stationery salon, the only one of its kind outside London, where customers can book one-to-one consultations for commissions including personal stationery, business cards, wedding invitations and holiday cards. In-store personalisation is also available, including gold-stamping on diaries, notebooks and leather goods.

To mark the opening, Smythson has created three exclusive versions of its Panama Notebook, featuring New York-inspired titles: ‘Uptown, Midtown, Downtown’, ‘I Love New York’ and ‘Empire State of Mind’.

“The opening of our Madison Avenue flagship marks the start of an important chapter in Smythson’s growth in the US, a market that is a key part of our international strategy,” said Paolo Porta, CEO of Smythson.

“We are proud to have such a loyal customer base in New York and are excited to be bringing our latest collections, as well as unique services such as our bespoke stationery salon and gold-stamping, to the city.”

Founded by Frank Smythson in 1887, the brand began on London’s New Bond Street and is known for its luxury stationery, leather goods and travel accessories.

In July 2025, Smythson was acquired by pan-European private equity investor Oakley Capital, joining its Iconic BrandCo portfolio alongside British luggage brand Globe-Trotter and leather goods brand Connolly. At the time, Smythson identified the US, Japan and Europe as key markets for international expansion.
